Scholarships and Financial Aid

Unfortunately we live in a world where life is not equal.  Lucky for us, there are programs out there to even the playing field a bit.  Provided here is a quick reference page for many different types of financial aids:

Scholarships & Grants- This is the best place to start because it is essentially free money.  Some scholarships have you write an essay or submit recomendation letters.  These are harder to get than loans but you don't ever have to pay them back.

Loans- Loans are much easier to obtain than scholarships or grants, but you have to pay them back once you graduate.  There are two different types of loans: subsidized and unsubsidized.  Subsidized loans are when the government or some other entity pays the interest for you and you only pay back what you borrowed.  Unsubsidized loans do have interest, but it is easier to be approved for larger amounts.

Work Programs- Use this link to find a list of jobs on campus.  This is especially useful for people living on campus.

Veteren's Benefits- If you were (or presently are) in one of the branches of the Armed Forces, you are eligible for government financial aid.

If you have a current employer, check with the HR department to see if they have any work reimbursement programs.  Many employers do, and it is free money that you can use and never have to pay back.  However, some companies will make you sign a contract that will make you stay at that place of employment for an arbitrary amount of time after you graduate.  Make sure you are aware of this before you sign any contract.

A note from your Sigma
If you've never been to the Writing Center, make it available to yourself as a good resource.  They do walk-ins or appointments and they'll help you write papers as first drafts or revise it for a final draft.

Let me know if you did not get my last email regarding the list of people that are good in subjects and can help tutor you.

The FAFSA deadline is February 1st!  http://www.fafsaonline.com/  BE CAREFUL because there are a lot of companies out there that make it look like they're FAFSA but they want you to pay.  FAFSA is free.  If you pay anyone for it, it's a scam!

Scholarships - go to the advising office in your major's building.  They have tons of scholarships available that many people don't take advantage of.  There is little to no competition and there's a good chance you will get free money.  Take advantage of this!

Check out fastweb.com for more scholarships.

If you need help in your classes, don't be afraid to ask!
